Hi Friends,
If you feel lost regarding treating vitiligo, or really don't know what to do, a Functional Treatment is a good start.
Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, functional medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.
A good Functional Treatment has to combine a lot of actions, ***ALL AT THE SAME TIME***. For instance: avoiding physical traumas and friction, balancing psychological and emotional issues, changing lifestyle, following an UVB-NB phototherapy, taking nutritional supplementation, reducing oxidative stress by taking anti-oxidants and anti-fungals, applying topical creams (Elidel, Protopic and Pseudocatalase), and also following a good diet if necessary (e.g., gluten-free, dairy-free).

What do you think about DL-Phenylalanine, apparently L-phenylalanine is a fundamental amino acid. It is used for constructing numerous proteins, and it is converted to L-tyrosine. Isn't it best to take L- tyrosine instead??
Kuiters, G.R., et al., 'Oral Phenylalanine Loading and Sunlight as Source of UVA Irradiation in Vitiligo on the Caribbean Island of Curacao', J. Trop. Med. Hyg: 89(3); 149-155,1986
If you believe you need Phenylalanine, you better take L-Phenylalanine, which is the natural form.
Sometimes it's better to take the precursors, like L-Tyrosine, because of absorption reasons.
Does Tyrosine upset the Thyroid?
I don't know. Talk to a Doctor.
Remember that all these diseases below might have a connection with vitiligo:
•Hypothyroidism
•Hashimoto disease
•Celiac disease
•Adrenal fatigue
•Liver toxicity
•Lead contamination
Flavio,
Is it practically possible to take all these vitamins and minerals daily? as the list is too long. How do we know that they are all needed, if you ask a dermatologist he would not suggest any of it or do blood test to check if we are deficinet of it, so no point in asking him about it. Is there any brand which gives you all in one? The anti oxident and anti fungal you mentioned, is it like any one of them daily or all of them daily?
Good question.
Regarding the supplements (vitamin+mineral+trace nutrient) I order in a customized way from https://www.customcapsule.com/index.html. All of these fit in 4 pills a day (2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon). Dr. Ray Strand has the theory that supports the need of all these supplements to avoid oxidative stress ( http://www.raystrand.com/ ).
Regarding the anti-oxidant, the ideal is to take all of them indeed.
About the anti-fungal, if you are sure (by a stool test) you don't have parasites, you can avoid Paracid, but most people have them. The others are mandatory.
Hi Rutu,
Answers:
1-My selection was:
It's true that they don't carry folate (natural form), which is better than folic acid. There is no perfect world...
2- If it says "x" capsules, it means that your selection will need "x" capsules to achieve the daily dose. So, yes, you will have to take "x" capsules a day. Remember, the more you add, the bigger is the number of capsules a day.
3- "x" pills a day. In your case, 2 a day.
4- I rely on their anti-oxidants. Specially R-ALA (very stable). However, I suggest you to take those recommended anti-fungal brands, since that is a top selection.
regards.
Flavio,
Question regarding the comment "Avoid Pseudocatalase cream on the spots that are being treated with Protopic (use only one or the other)."
I have noticed my vitiligo patches flare up since the use of both tropical cream and pseudocatalase. My dermatologist at that point did not object to using both creams. I would like to understand the reason behind the quoted statement in your post.
The German Doctor said that. The one that invented pseudocatalase.
I'm just trying to be conservative.
Anyway, it's good to know other opinion...
