Has anyone found that figuring out any food allergies has helped slow down the spread of this? Until now I have had no known food allergies. I went gluten free last week and I am going to the allergist next week for food allergy testing. I am curious to see what it shows and if any allergies could be contributing to it spread so quickly! Trying to do everything I can to figure out what's going on.

Food allergies cause oxidative stress in the body. Sometimes it has no visual effect. But most of the times it causes many skin problems.
Oxidative stress causes defect in the membrane integrity, also causes lipid peroxidation, generates hydrogen peroxide in the skin and mutates mitochondrial DNA. All this weakens cell adhesion. Non-segmental vitiligo starts because people who are pre-disposed to have dysfunctional melanocytes, start having mutated melanocytes. Their cell adhesion becomes compromised.
Despite the oxidative stress (a likely main cause), vitiligo only appears after triggered by a severe external or internal event. Trigger can have emotional, psychological, physical or enviromental facets.
