Martial arts are very bad for vitiligo sufferers

Hi All,

Who has never heard someone saying that Martial Arts is good for vitiligo?

Don't buy it !  It's very bad for vitiligo sufferers...

I admire a lot the UFC fighter Scott Jorgensen for 2 reasons:

1- He is a great fighter.

2- The way he deals with the disease psychologically.

However,  martial arts definitely aggravated his vitiligo condition.

If you want to do martial arts to de-stress, to relax, to fight vitiligo,  forget about it.  It will worsen your condition because of the impacts, friction, hits, hurts, scratches, knocks, punches, etc.

  • Unfortunately,  some people don't want to accept the idea that physical traumas are one of the main causes of vitiligo.  As well as oxidative stress. Emotional/Psychological stress complement the top 3 list.

    • Thank you for your reply! I guess that makes sense why it is spreading more on the under of my forearms opposed to the tops since that is where most of the rubbing happens. And under my biceps as well. I definitely think trauma causes it, Anywhere I have had stitches usually heals over with vitiligo but it hasnt spread from there yet.

      • When you have a physical trauma in a non-rubbing area, it's more likely to repigment it if you take the proper actions (UVB-NB, creams, anti-oxidants, etc.), since this area will not be giving daily basys causes for spreading.  So, the "bad protein" (the one that causes melanocyte detachment) will not proliferate.

On rubbing (friction) areas,  the "bad protein" is being  generated all the time.  It's a forever fight: "bad protein" x melanocyte generation.  So, if you  take all proper actions (UVB-NB, creams, anti-oxidants, etc.), you might tie (not lose).  Sometimes, beat it.

That's why vitiligo in hands and feet are tough.  Joints make it even worse.

Vitiligo on face has to do with bone protuberance.  When we sleep,  we apply a big weight against the skin, what causes vitiligo in pre-disposed people:

  • Definitely trauma.

Traumas (specially near joints) produce a bad protein that detachs melanocytes.

This protein is the same that dettaches melanomas.  It should not be produced, but it is in vitiligo pre-disposed people.

Binding this protein, might achieve a cure.  Many studies are working on it, but nothing has been developed yet.

  • Yeah since i started training jiujitsu a couple years ago it seems like my spots have spread more... didnt know if it was caused by normal spreading or trauma.
