Creating a Blog.

so i was thinking in creating a blog that will pretty much cover 75% of my life! including my experiences with vitiligo and make an awareness about it to the rest of my community! I've noticed that now that i have vitiligo, for the past few months i have come across people with vitiligo, i would say at least 6-8 times, most of them being teenagers and young adults, its almost like when you purchased a car, you have never noticed the model but now that you own one, you see it everywhere, anyways back to my point, so yeah creating a blog and once that is settle, i will create like some type of business cards/flyer, promoting my blog and this site too! because i think no one like us should struggle alone and should not feel alone, i know how it feels, and that feeling went away when i came across this site. Well the purpose of me writing this is to get ideas from you guys and also advice of what i should cover on my blog and how could i approach someone with vitiligo, without freaking them out and without me freaking out lol!

Thanks for Reading!

  • I love the car metaphor!

As far as approaching others, it varies from person to person. Some people spook easily. I have only seen my make/model (haw haw!) less than a hand full of times in the 17 years since my diagnosis. I've never said anything to any of these 3-4 people, usually because I only saw them in passing. I'd say use your best judgement, and maybe start by asking them specifically if they vitiligo (never assume!). If they say yes and seem open to discussion, why the heck not talk to them? Frankly, I'd be thrilled if someone with vitiligo approached me. It'd be like finding someone after all this time who knows the secret handshake!

As for blog content, some of the best blogs are the ones that are honest. If you've never checked it out, go to x-entertainment.com (it sounds bad, but is very safe for work) and read some of the guy's articles. He writes about everything from his favorite toys from the 80's to playing Monopoly with his family as a child. At one point he tracks down a can of spaghetti-o's that expired some 12 years before and decides to open the can and see what's inside. While the basic subject itself is nothing exciting, it's his writing style and brutal honesty that will have you laughing. My other favorite is fourfour.typepad.com. The guy writes everything from well thought out reviews of new music to animated recaps of "RuPaul's Drag Race", along with videos of his cats thrown in for fun. I'd say talk about whatever piques your interest, find your own "voice", don't be afraid of a little self deprecating humor, and have fun with it.
    • thank you so much!! i will be checking those blogs out! and yeah that car metaphor is the first thing that came to my mind when i thought about my vitiligo, again thanks, and ill be keeping you updated about my blog! hopefully everything goes well and by monday ill have my blog set and running!!
    • I agree with Ali Marie. Be honest in your blog, about your life experiences and vitiligo in particular. One of the biggest issues I see facing the vitiligo community is that it is widely scattered, making it hard to gather together for support and to press for more research and awareness.

Also, if you do approach someone with vitiligo, make sure to still be discrete. After all, they could be trying to hide it from friends/family/romantic interests or trying to ignore it. You might spark a nerve.

Other than that, I wish you good luck.
