Confused after my granddaughter's biopsy came back

We waited 2 weeks for my granddaughter's biopsy to come back from the dermatologist office. She's 12 years old by the way, they called us up and said that she tested positive for Tinea Versicolor a rash caused by a fungus. Our first reaction was did you test for Vitiligo as well did the test say anything about that condition which we are pretty sure that's what she has. The nurse said that they asked for the test to be done but the results that came back didn't mention Vitiligo at all one way or the other.

We are very upset and confused, why wouldn't the test results even mention Vitiligo one way or the other, are the nurses incompetent or is the lab incompetent. We asked them to call the lab back and find out what's going on and of course we haven't heard back from them yet.

When my granddaughter had the biopsy taken from her back it looked like a small chunk was taken out which they didn't even stitch up, it's a big scab now.

Has anyone had a similar experience with there dermatologist, we have an appointment tomorrow with him which is very hard to get as he has 3 or 4 offices he covers. I want my daughter to find another doctor because this experience soured me towards him and his staff.

  • What did her patches look like? Did they confirm the vitiligo just by looking at it? Did they do a wood lamp test at all?

    • They were 99% sure it was Vitiligo just by looking at it but they did a biopsy on a healthy patch of skin and that came back positive for Tinea Vericolor and after a visit with the dermatologist they said she might also have Lupus, so they need a special blood test to determine that. I don't know what else could go wrong at this point we are all in shock at this latest news.

      • Also sending you positive thoughts.

        • Thank you very much for your helpful thoughts and comments.

      • Sending positive thoughts about the rest of her results!

  • Can you post a pic of her ? Vitiligo is so visible in sun.
  • tinea versicolor can easily be treated with dandruff shampoo.  If thats what your granddaughter try putting on selsun blue, or coconut oil.  the spots shot disappear.  are they small circles or irregular patterns?

    • Maybe it's not vitiligo. tinea versicolor is so easily treatable. try the selsun blue and if it clears it up. Problem solved. If it does clear then it's probably vitiligo. Most doctors don't do biopsies Bc it has some risks and besides they feel they can easily diagnose it. Why wasn't a woods lamp used?
      • We found out today why the biopsy didn't show up having Vitiligo. It was because the nurses took the biopsy from a clear piece of skin not one from bleached or damaged area. Don't just have to do everything yourself any more. Of course it would have to come from the dmaged area.

    • My concern and dismay is why didn't the biopsy report even mention Vitiligo as that's what the biopsy was taken for to confirm it.
