Hi everyone,

I know I have read that Vitiligo can run in Families (although in my case I am not aware of any member of my family ever having Vitiligo). My husband and I are trying to start a family but I'm concerned because I don't want to pass this on to them. Have any of you seen this in your children?

  • My mom has vitiligo, and I'm the only one so far who has inherited it from her...i've got 3 other siblings

My mom got it when she was about 50 while i first discovered it when i was in my mid 20s...

  • my parents dont have it but my grandmother on my father side have it so me and my eldest brother and other sister have it.i dont worry with my son n daughter will have it but the dr. said my grandchildren will have the great chance to have it. it will appear in the 3rd generation
  • Great question I was curious about this too as some day in the future I would like to have children (Im 23 now). My father had vitiligo and I have it, mine started around age 12. But my two brothers do not have it they are ages 26 and 17. No one else in my family has vitiligo.

Do you think pregnancy will cause our vitiligo to get a lot worse? I have read it may get worse on a website, but I have not heard that from someone pregnant directly.

    • None of my immediate or extended family members have vitiligo.   Passing it on to kids is something that also worries me.
  • My mother and my grandmother both have vitiligo so im quite concerned about passing it on to my son..
  • I have had Vitiligo for 21 years and my son has had it 22 years. Two of my children do not have it. I fear my grandbabies will get it.

  • Grand mother, mother& here brother. My brother. So it runs in our family. I started after a stress periode at the age of 40 only.
  • vitiligo is genetic in a small percentage of patients, while auto immunity accounts for majority of the cases, however i have seen in my clinical practice a few families in whom autoimmune diseases run,

the chances of you passing this on to your children are remote

however there is a small chance of your vitiligo flaring up during pregnancy and childbirth period

  •  I don't have any children. However, no one in either my paternal or maternal side of the family has it.  Not as far back as either side can remember.

    • could of been a recessed gene or something.  or never came to fruition in others.

you wear it well though. ;-)
